AI Search Visibility Statistics (2026)
The numbers that define how brands get found, cited, and recommended inside AI answers. This roundup pairs original MDRN SEO study data with a short set of external statistics, each attributed to a named, linked source.
Search is splitting in two. Alongside the classic list of blue links, buyers now get a single synthesized answer from ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews, and that answer names a short list of brands. Visibility now means being one of the names the engine cites. The statistics below quantify that shift. Original figures come from the MDRN SEO AI Citation Study (July 2026). External figures are each attributed to a named source with a link. Where we could not attribute a number to a real, nameable source, we left it out.
What AI engines actually cite when buyers ask who to hire
In July 2026 we asked ChatGPT (GPT-5.5) and Claude (Opus 4.8) the same 24 high-intent SEO hiring questions and recorded all 48 answers. Full method is in the AI Citation Study. The headline statistics: The same method applied to cannabis and dispensary SEO produced an even wider gap: see what AI cites for cannabis SEO.
When buyers asked AI who to hire for SEO, engines named a specific hireable agency in just 33% of the 42 hiring-intent answers.

One in four AI answers stayed fully generic or hedged, naming no brand, tool, or agency at all.

Ahrefs, Perplexity, and Semrush tied as the most-cited entities at 16 mentions each. All three are tools, not hireable agencies.

Perplexity was cited in 100% of GEO-agency and 100% of AI-search-visibility answers, the only entity to reach 100% in a hiring category.

ChatGPT and Claude agreed weakly: mean cited-entity overlap (Jaccard) across matched questions was 0.31. You cannot optimize for “AI” as one thing.

Across all six cannabis dispensary SEO answers, both engines named zero agencies. Four of eight categories had no dominant cited source.

“When buyers ask AI who to hire for SEO, a specific agency is named only a third of the time, and the most-cited names are software tools, not firms you can hire.”MDRN SEO AI Citation Study, July 2026 (48 answers across two engines)

Why AI visibility is now its own discipline
Traditional search traffic is forecast to shrink while AI answers absorb the click, and inside those answers only a handful of brands get cited. Our own study shows the cited shortlist is short, tool-heavy, and inconsistent between engines, which means whole categories of buyers are being handed an answer with no clear brand in it. That is the gap generative engine optimization exists to close: becoming one of the corroborated, entity-clear names an AI engine can cite with confidence, across each engine’s distinct sourcing.
